Costa Rica President Slams Possibility of Military Intervention in Venezuela

The president of Costa Rica, Carlos Alvarado, has said that a military intervention is an unacceptable option to resolve the Venezuelan crisis

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 23rd May, 2019) The president of Costa Rica, Carlos Alvarado, has said that a military intervention is an unacceptable option to resolve the Venezuelan crisis.

Earlier in May, the Venezuelan opposition leader, Juan Guaido, formally asked the US military for help in overthrowing the incumbent government of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

"Costa-Rica is not among the states which believe that all routes can be taken [to resolve the crisis in Venezuela]. We do not think that the military route is possible in the 21st century. Dialogue and democracy must prevail," Alvaro told the Spanish EFE news outlet on Thursday.

The crisis in Venezuela started in January, after Guaido proclaimed himself interim president and launched political protests. Costa Rica is among the Lima Group countries that have endorsed him as Venezuela's leader and urged Maduro to step down. Maduro, in turn, has accused the United States of attempting to orchestrate a coup and gain access to the country's oil reserves via bringing a puppet politician to power.
