MADRID (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 23rd May, 2019) The Spanish constitutional court on Thursday threw out a lawsuit by former Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont against his dismissal two years ago, according to the ruling seen by Sputnik.Puigdemont was fired in October 2017 under the same law that suspended the wealthy region's autonomy in response to a declaration of independence by its authorities.
Catalonia held a controversial referendum on splitting from Spain on October 1, 2017. It found that a vast majority of those who turned up voted for independence.
The top court said the vote was illegal. Puigdemont and several other members of his cabinet fled Spain, where they faced charges of rebellion, sedition and misuse of public funds to organize the ballot.
