Egypt, Cyprus Sign Historic Deal to Connect Power Grids

Egypt and Cyprus signed a deal on Thursday to connect their power grids with an underwater cable, the first such link between Europe and Africa

ATHENS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 23rd May, 2019) Egypt and Cyprus signed a deal on Thursday to connect their power grids with an underwater cable, the first such link between Europe and Africa.

The pact was signed in Cairo by EuroAfrica Interconnector CEO Nasos Ktorides and Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company chief Sabah Mohamed Mashal.

"The agreement provides for the development of an electricity interconnection with the use of subsea high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cables with the capacity to transmit 2,000MW," a press release by EuroAfrica Interconnector read.

Initial costs of the laying the cable are estimated at $26 billion. It is expected to be completed in December 2021. Egypt's President Abdel Fatah Sisi has praised the project for turning the country into a key energy hub for Africa, Arab countries and Europe.
