Senior EU Lawmaker Calls Strache, Other Right-Wing Politicians 'Traitors Of Europe'

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 23rd May, 2019) Belgian politician Guy Verhofstadt, who currently heads the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE), called former Austrian Vice-Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache and other right-wing EU politicians "traitors of Europe" who are allegedly acting in the interests of the Kremlin.

Strache was forced to resign as both Austrian vice-chancellor and leader of the Freedom Party of Austria last week after media released a 2017 video of him promising to fix public contracts in exchange for support ahead of Austria's legislative elections from a woman posed as a niece of a Russian oligarch.

"These people are acting in the interests of the Kremlin. I want to prevent that. I call them traitors. Strache and the nationalists are traitors of Europe. When one acts in such a way, makes such deals with Kremlin, that shows what is [for him or her] more important than Europe's good future," Verhofstadt told Der Standard newspaper in an interview.

He also mentioned President of the French National Rally Marine Le Pen, head of the Italian Lega Party Matteo Salvini and leader of the UK Brexit Party Nigel Farage as politicians who were allegedly loyal to Russia and financed by Moscow.

Russian has been repeatedly accused of meddling in the internal affairs of EU countries and the United States. Moscow has repeatedly refuted these allegations.
