Egypt's security forces have killed at least 16 militants in two counter-terrorist raids conducted in the northern Sinai, the Egyptian Interior Ministry said on Tuesday
CAIRO (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 21st May, 2019) Egypt's security forces have killed at least 16 militants in two counter-terrorist raids conducted in the northern Sinai, the Egyptian Interior Ministry said on Tuesday."The Egyptian national security agency detected the location of two terrorist cells that were planning series of attacks against vital facilities and high-ranking figures in the city of Arish," the statement said.
As a result of the operation, several weapons, three explosive devices and a suicide belt were seized.
On Monday, the Egyptian authorities reported that 12 militants had been killed during a special operation in the suburbs of Cairo.
Egypt launched its Comprehensive Operation Sinai, a major anti-terrorist offensive in the north and the center of the peninsula, in February 2018. Since then, hundreds of militants have been killed and detained.
Cairo has been battling Islamic insurgents in the desert region for years. Police and security forces, as well as civilians, have frequently been the target of deadly attacks staged by the terrorists.
