Jordan Confirms Support for UN Efforts to Preserve Syria's Integrity - Foreign Ministry

Jordan Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi confirmed during his meeting with UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen Amman's support for UN efforts to maintain Syria's integrity and to find a political solution for the country's crisis, a communique by Jordan's Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday

AMMAN (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 21st May, 2019) Jordan Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi confirmed during his meeting with UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen Amman's support for UN efforts to maintain Syria's integrity and to find a political solution for the country's crisis, a communique by Jordan's Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday.

"During the meeting, Safadi confirmed support of the UN efforts to resolve the crisis on the basis of preserving the integrity of Syria and restoring its stability and security," the message read.

Safadi noted the importance of establishing conditions for the return of refugees to their homeland and stressed that Jordan had hosted 1.3 million refugees from Syria. Pedersen, in turn, pointed out Jordan's important role in humanitarian assistance that implied deployment of a large number of refugees from Syria. The envoy also emphasized the importance of joint actions in resolving the crisis.

The Syrian conflict started in 2011, causing massive out-migration. According to United Nations High Commissioner's for Refugees data, there are over 6 million Syrians registered as refugees seeking asylum in 45 countries all over the world.

Jordan is one the most popular destinations for Syrian refugees, as well as Lebanon, Turkey and Iraq. According to the UN data, Jordan has welcomed more than 660,000 Syrians as of April 9, 2019.
