France Concerned by Indonesian Death Sentence to French Drug Dealer

The French Foreign Ministry said it was worried about an Indonesian court's decision on Monday to hand death sentence to a Frenchman on drug smuggling charges

PARIS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 20th May, 2019) The French Foreign Ministry said it was worried about an Indonesian court's decision on Monday to hand death sentence to a Frenchman on drug smuggling charges.

"We are concerned about the verdict for our countryman. We took note of his decision to appeal. He has been receiving consular protection since his arrest in September 2018. We are monitoring his situation," the ministry said.

Felix Dorfin, 35, was arrested after flying to the Indonesian island of Lombok from Singapore with a suitcase full of cocaine, ecstasy and amphetamines. He fled prison in January and was recaptured after an 11-day manhunt.

A total of seven French nationals are currently on death row in foreign prisons, the French ministry added. It said that Paris opposed capital punishment and would continue calling for their sentences to be commuted.
