UNESCO Chief Condemns Recent Killings of 2 Journalists in Pakistan

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay condemned on Monday the killings of two Pakistani journalists, both of which happened several weeks ago

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 20th May, 2019) UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay condemned on Monday the killings of two Pakistani journalists, both of which happened several weeks ago.

On April 30, Malik Amanullah Khan, a reporter for the local Meezan-e-Adal newspaper and Chairman of the Parowa Press Club, was killed by unidentified gunmen in the northwestern Pakistan city of Dera Ismail Khan. On May 4, Ali Sher Rajpar, a journalist for Sindhi daily newspaper Awami Awaz, was killed in the town of Padidan, several days after he had requested police protection over threats he received.

"I condemn the killing of Ali Sher Rajpar and Malik Amanullah Khan. Bringing those responsible for these crimes to justice is essential for press freedom in the country, and for journalists' ability to inform citizens and hold authorities to account," Azoulay said in a statement.

UNESCO promotes programs that create free and safe environments for journalists and media workers. The agency's initiatives are based on the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
