Houthis Deny Firing Missiles at Mecca, Accuse Riyadh of Covering Up Own Crimes

DOHA (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 20th May, 2019) The Houthi movement said on Monday that Saudi Arabia was trying to cover up its aggression against Yemen and refuted reports that Saudi air defense allegedly intercepted two ballistic missiles, one headed for Mecca and the other for Jeddah, launched by the rebels.

On Sunday, media reported that the Houthi rebels were going to attack some 300 critical infrastructure facilities in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Earlier in the day, Al Arabiya TV Channel reported, citing eyewitnesses, that Saudi Arabia's air defense had shot down ballistic missiles launched by the Houthis at Mecca, Islam's holiest city, located in Saudi Arabia, and the nearby port city of Jeddah.

"It is not the first time that the Saudi regime is attributing an attack on Mecca to us while trying to get support for its brutal aggression against Yemen. It [Saudi Arabia] is once again trying to cover up crimes against our people by using Mecca as the religious aspect," the movement's representative said on the Almasirah channel.

He also stated that the Houthis were presenting all the information about their military actions themselves.

On May 14, the movement carried out drone attacks on Saudi oil facilities, causing fire and minor damage. The Houthis have called this the largest military operation conducted by the rebels against Saudi Arabia since the start of their armed conflict with the Riyadh-backed Yemeni government.

The kingdom has vowed to retaliate against the Houthis, who, it believes, are backed by Iran. Tehran, however, has repeatedly denied having any role in the Yemen conflict.

Yemen has been engulfed in an armed conflict between the government forces led by President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi and the Houthi rebels for several years. The Saudi-led coalition has been carrying out airstrikes against the Houthis at Hadi's request since March 2015.
