WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 17th May, 2019) US President Donald Trump's proposal outlining major overhaul of the US immigration system runs contrary to American values, Congressman Joaquin Castro said in a statement on Friday.On Thursday, Trump announced a new proposal that would scale back family-based immigration and boost a merit-based system that would focus on attracting young, educated and skilled immigrants into the United States.
"The President's proposal betrays American values," Castro said. "President Trump - the most anti-immigrant and xenophobic President in generations - hopes to use the concept of 'merit' to keep out of this country people that Stephen Miller doesn't like."
Castro slammed Trump's plan saying it would establish a practice of "cherry-picking" the definition of merit and said that manually intensive labor equally well may fit Trump's definition.
"Few among us could work on a roof in the July Texas sun, or work the fields of the Central Valley or Midwest for eight hours a day. That seems like a 'highly skilled' worker to me," Castro said.
The White House proposal does not address other immigration issues such as the humanitarian crisis at the US southern border and the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) - a program put in place by the Obama administration that grants legal status to children of illegal immigrants who were born in the United States.
