Russia, Lebanon Discuss Military Cooperation, Return of Syrian Refugees - Defense Ministry

Russian Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin met with Adviser to the Lebanese Prime Minister George Shaaban on Friday and discussed with him the return of Syrian refugees to their home country, the Russian Ministry of Defense said in a statement on Friday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 17th May, 2019) Russian Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin met with Adviser to the Lebanese Prime Minister George Shaaban on Friday and discussed with him the return of Syrian refugees to their home country, the Russian Ministry of Defense said in a statement on Friday.

"During the meeting, issues of current status and prospects for the development of bilateral military and military-technical cooperation were discussed. Also during the talks, the problems of the return of Syrian refugees to their places of permanent residence in the Syrian Arab Republic were discussed," the statement read.

According to the ministry, the sides also confirmed their commitment to further develop cooperation in the defense and security sectors.

The civil war in Syria, in its eighth year now, prompted over 5 million Syrians to leave their country. Moscow assists Damascus in creating favorable repatriation conditions, including by delivering regular shipments of humanitarian aid to Syria. Since July 2018, more than 225,000 Syrian refugees have managed to return home from neighboring Lebanon and Jordan.
