Nebenzia Emphasizes Need to Prevent Escalation in Persian Gulf as US-Iran Tensions Rise

Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vassily Nebenzia said during a UN Security Council meeting on Friday that it is vital to prevent any escalation in the Persian Gulf amid the rising tensions between Washington and Tehran

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 17th May, 2019) Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vassily Nebenzia said during a UN Security Council meeting on Friday that it is vital to prevent any escalation in the Persian Gulf amid the rising tensions between Washington and Tehran.

"What is important right now is to prevent escalation of the Persian Gulf related to the growing American-Iran tensions," Nebenzia said. "This would provide us with a great impetus for political settlement throughout the region as a whole. And without that this could make the region slide into chaos."

Tensions have been soaring between the United States and Iran over the past week as Washington has stepped up its military forces in the middle East in what White House National Security Adviser John Bolton has called "a clear and unmistakable message to the Iranian regime." The deployment includes a carrier strike group, Patriot missiles, B-52 bombers and F-15 fighters, according to the Pentagon.

On Wednesday, the US State Department partially evacuated its facilities in Iraq, citing threatening activities in neighboring Iran.

President Donald Trump told reporters on Thursday that he hopes the United States will not go to war with Iran.
