Merkel Says Security to Be Criterion in Choosing 5G Developing Companies in Germany

Germany will make a decision on which companies will be involved in the development of the country's 5G network on the basis of security criteria, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Thursday, commenting on the recent order of US President Donald Trump in the sphere of IT security

BERLIN (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 16th May, 2019) Germany will make a decision on which companies will be involved in the development of the country's 5G network on the basis of security criteria, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Thursday, commenting on the recent order of US President Donald Trump in the sphere of IT security.

Trump issued on Wednesday an executive order declaring a national emergency over telecommunications technology and services linked to foreign adversaries, prohibiting US companies from engaging in transactions with companies from adversary countries. Media reports suggest that the declaration of national emergency allows the Trump administration to ban US companies from doing business with Chinese telecommunication giant Huawei.

"In my opinion, we are moving toward the issue of participation in 5G networks creation very reasonably. There are security criteria that are formulated collectively. In connection with these criteria, we will make decisions regarding the relevant companies, for us these criteria are the main determining point," Merkel told reporters at a joint press conference with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte.

Huawei has been accused by several countries of being sponsored by the Chinese state and spying on its behalf through its devices. Last year, Australia, Japan, New Zealand and the United States banned the company from participating in government contracts due to security concerns. Huawei has vehemently denied the accusations.
