Lahore (Pakistan Point News – 15th May, 2019) The offshore drilling in Kekra 1 block near the Karachi coast has been completed.

The next 48 hours are being considered important after the drilling process has been completed. Meanwhile, the testing process to determine the quantity of oil and gas has been initiated.

The testing process will conclude within 48 to 72 hours.

An infrastructure would be built after the confirmation of the amount of the reserves.

A joint venture of four major oil exploration companies has completed the offshore drilling process near Karachi coast after a hard work of four months.

According to media reports, ExxonMobil, ENI, Oil and Gas Development Company, and Pakistan Petroleum Limited are conducting the drill stem test to determine the real size of the oil and gas reserves in the Kekra-1 well, located around 280 km away from Karachi.

The joint venture of four oil giants spudded the Kekra-1 well to the depth of 5,470 m at a cost of Rs14 billion.

The consortium has started drilling activities on January 13, 2019.

Experts believe that there are huge hydrocarbon deposits, sufficient for 25 to 30-year needs of the country, if proven. The discovery is anticipated to yield gas flows which could be 'as big as Sui field,' with estimated reserves of three to eight trillion cubic feet (TCF), or 25-40 percent of the country's total gas reserves.

Minister for Petroleum Omar Ayub Khan and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Petroleum Nadeem Babar Friday visited the offshore Indus G-Block called Kekra-I, some 230-km off the Karachi coast, and reviewed pace of the drilling activities.
