Claude Monet's 'Meules' Sold For $110.7Mln At Sotheby's Auction - Statement

NEW YORK (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 15th May, 2019) Claude Monet's "Meules" painting was sold at Sotheby's Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale for $110.7 million, which is the highest sum ever paid for Monet's and any other Impressionist painting, the Sotheby's company said in a statement.

"Claude Monet's Meules, the most glorious and effusive work from the artist's famed Haystacks series, sold Tuesday at Sotheby's Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale for an astonishing $110,747,000. The winning bid shatters the previous record for the highest sum ever paid for a work by Monet, signaling the enduring value and popularity of the French Impressionist master; the bid is also the record for any Impressionist work of art," the statement said on late Tuesday.

The Haystacks series of more than 20 paintings was created by Monet in 1890-1891 when the artist lived in the northern French village of Giverny.

Monet is a founder of French Impressionist painting, which is a 19th century art movement that tended to depict objects by means of dabs and strokes of Primary unmixed colors, thus simulating reflected light.
