MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 13th May, 2019) Special Presidential Representative for the middle East and Africa Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov discussed political settlement in Syria with Qadri Jamil, a leader of the Syrian Popular Front for Change and Liberation opposition coalition and head of the Syrian opposition's Moscow platform, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Monday.

"[During the meeting] the sides exchanged views on political settlement objectives in Syria in accordance with the Syrian National Dialogue Congress decisions made in Sochi and the provisions of UN Security Council Resolution 2254," the ministry said stressing the need to ensure the unity, sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic.

UN Security Council Resolution 2254 was adopted in December 2015 and calls for a ceasefire and political settlement in Syria.

Russia-initiated Syrian National Dialogue Congress took place in Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi in early 2018 and brought together a vast number of the opposition and pro-governmental forces, as well as representatives of all ethnical and religious groups of Syria. The event ended with creation of the Constitutional Commission designed to amend Syria's existing constitution. The participants of the congress also adopted a final communique endorsing the general principles of the future statehood of Syria, such as the country's territorial integrity and respect for all religious and ethnic groups' rights.

The settlement process for the Syrian conflict, which broke out in 2011, has been discussed on a number of international platforms. The Syrian National Dialogue Congress was the first attempt to gather a wide range of people representing various groups of Syrian society at one venue.
