Gulf Cooperation Council Condemns Sabotage Against 4 Vessels in UAE's Waters - Statement

The Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Abdul Latif bin Rashid Al Zayani, condemned on Monday acts of sabotage against four commercial ships in the waters of the United Arab Emirates

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 13th May, 2019) The Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Abdul Latif bin Rashid Al Zayani, condemned on Monday acts of sabotage against four commercial ships in the waters of the United Arab Emirates.

UAE Foreign Ministry said on Sunday that four merchant ships had been subject to "sabotage operations" in the vicinity of the Fujairah port, stressing that the incident had resulted in no injuries and took place outside the port.

"It is a dangerous development and escalation that reflects the evil intentions of those who planned and carried out these operations that endanger the safety of maritime navigation in the region and threaten the lives of the ships' civilian crews," the statement says.

Al Zayani also noted that such incidents might lead to an escalation of conflicts in the region.

"The Secretary General ... urged the international community and international organizations involved in maritime shipping to fulfill political and legal obligations to prevent any parties trying to violate the safety of maritime navigation in this vital region of the world," the statement says.

The Al-Mayadeen broadcaster reported earlier on Sunday that several powerful explosions had hit the port, following a huge fire that had engulfed at least seven oil tankers. The government of the Fujairah Emirate then refuted this report, calling on media to use only official sources of information.
