US, Taliban Conclude Round 6 Of Talks With Need For 'Faster Progress' - Special Envoy

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 10th May, 2019) US Special Representative for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad in a statement said that the sixth round of talks with the Taliban in Qatar has ended and more and faster progress is needed.

"The current pace of talks isn't sufficient when so much conflict rages and innocent people die," Khalilzad said via Twitter on Thursday. "We need more and faster progress. Our proposal for all sides to reduce violence also remains on the table."

Khalilzad said US and Taliban negotiators "made steady but slow progress" on the aspects of the framework for an Afghan settlement.

The sixth round of peace talks between the United States and the Taliban began last week in the Qatari capital of Doha. The two sides are trying to reach a peace deal and discuss the intra-Afghan dialogue, withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan, a permanent ceasefire and assurances that the country will not be used as a safe haven for terrorists who threaten the United States and its allies.

The armed confrontation between Kabul and the Taliban has been dragging on for years, with the insurgents carrying out regular attacks across the country, and the government conducting anti-terrorist raids with support from the United States.
