MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 09th May, 2019) The death toll in a recent Taliban attack on a foreign non-governmental organization (NGO), Counterpart International, in the Afghan capital of Kabul has climbed to nine, media reported on Thursday, citing the country's Interior Ministry.

There are three civilians among those killed, according to the ministry's spokesman, Nasrat Rahimi, cited by the TOLOnews broadcaster. Twenty other people were injured in the attack.

The ministry added that over 170 NGO employees had been rescued by the Afghan security forces during a special operation at the attack scene.

Earlier, the ministry reported that at least five people, including a woman, were killed and 24 civilians were wounded as a group of Taliban militants started a gunfire at the entrance of Counterpart International, an NGO funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), on Wednesday. The operation to neutralize attackers took nearly six hours.

The US embassy in Kabul and the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) have strongly condemned the attack, while former President of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai has called the attack a crime against humanity and an act contradicting "all human and Islamic principles and values."
