Young doctors end strike following Data Darbar blast

An emergency has been declared at the hospitals while the holidays of the hospital staff have also been cancelled.

Lahore (Pakistan Point News – 8th May, 2019) The Young Doctors Association (YDA) has announced to end its strike following suicide attack at Data Darbar in Lahore.

The YDA was on a strike since six days at government hospitals in Punjab against the Medical Teaching Institutions (MTI) Reform Act.

The OPDs at hospitals across Punjab were closed due to the YDA strike causing problems for patients. The YDA demanded that the strike at OPDs would continue till the acceptance of their demands which included stopping of the alleged privatisation of hospitals and implementation of MTI act, announcement of the service structure and provision of security to doctors.

However, following the suicide attack at Data Darbar that claimed the lives of 9 people, the YDA announced to end the strike.

An emergency has been declared at the hospitals while the holidays of the hospital staff have also been cancelled.

Atleast eight people, including five policemen, were killed while several others were injuried in a suicide attack near Data Darbar on Wednesday.

Rescue 1122 sources said that the blast took place near a police van outside Data Darbar, gate no. 2.

The officials of elite forces were targeted in the blast. Five policemen are confirmed to have been martyred and 25 other people received injuries.

According to police, seven kilogram explosive material was used in the blast.

The injured were shifted to Mayo hospital.

The security forces have cordoned off the area and started investigation.
