Japan to Urge North Korea to Promptly Hold Summit Without Preconditions - Reports

The Japanese government has decided to call on North Korea to promptly convene a bilateral summit without preconditions, local media reported on Tuesday citing government sources

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 07th May, 2019) The Japanese government has decided to call on North Korea to promptly convene a bilateral summit without preconditions, local media reported on Tuesday citing government sources.

This comes a day after Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said he was ready to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un without preconditions in order to discuss abductions of Japanese citizens by North Korea.

According to the Kyodo news agency, Tokyo's intention to convene a summit without preconditions would be delivered not only through official channels, such as the embassy in Beijing, but also through unofficial contacts between high-ranking officials and aides at international conferences.

Japan insists that North Korean security services have abducted a total of 17 Japanese nationals. Pyongyang admitted in 2002 abducting only 13 of them. Five of the kidnapped Japanese citizens have been repatriated, and North Korea has claimed that eight others have died. Tokyo refuses to believe this and requests investigation.
