WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 02nd May, 2019) Progress in ongoing US-China trade talks has opened the prospect that the two nations will unveil a new trade agreement as early as next week, media reports said on Wednesday.
The announcement of a US trade deal with China is "possible" by Friday, May 9, CNBC reported, citing unnamed sources.
A US delegation met with Chinese negotiators in Beijing earlier on Wednesday, and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He is slated to arrive in Washington for continued negotiations next week.
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who took part in the latest negotiations in Beijing, described the talks as "productive."
White House spokesman Sarah Sanders earlier on Wednesday also called the latest round of talks "productive," telling reporters that the "discussions remain focused toward making substantial progress on important structural issues and rebalancing the US-China trade relationship."
China and the United States have been engaged in a trade dispute since last June, when Trump announced the United States would subject $50 billion worth of Chinese goods to 25 percent tariffs in a bid to fix the over $400 billion US-Chinese trade deficit. Since then, the two countries have exchanged several rounds of trade�tariffs.
