Caracas Does Not Expect EU to Impose Sanctions on Venezuela - Ambassador to EU

Caracas does not expect EU to give in to pressure from Washington to impose economic sanctions on Venezuela, the Latin American country's ambassador to the European Union, Claudia Salerno Caldera, told Sputnik on Wednesday

BRUSSELS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 01st May, 2019) Caracas does not expect EU to give in to pressure from Washington to impose economic sanctions on Venezuela, the Latin American country's ambassador to the European Union, Claudia Salerno Caldera, told Sputnik on Wednesday.

"[The United States] is moving with such a strong and heavy hand against us [Venezuela]. [It is] putting a lot of enormous pressure on certain countries of the European Union, pushing them to [impose] more sanctions. But the point is that the framework in which the EU [adopted] sanctions on Venezuela is quite precise, in the sense that they do not include all these commercial, economic and financial parts," she said.

She noted that the European Union had introduced a ban on exporting equipment to Venezuela that could be used by the country's governmental forces to contain protests. However, that was just "a statement than a practical measure" since Caracas did not buy such equipment from the bloc, she stressed.

"I do not think that these kind of measures are going to come from the European Union," she concluded, referring to economic sanctions. She stressed that Venezuelan relations with the United States were more commercial, while relations between Caracas and Brussels were "emotional."
