Yemen's Warring Parties Seek Own Glory, Unwilling to Consider Peace - Houthi Predecessor

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 30th April, 2019) Parties to the conflict in Yemen are not ready to negotiate peace because each side is convinced that a victory is coming for them, Mohammed Azzana, a founder of the Yemeni Believing Youth movement, which spawned the Houthi movement, told Sputnik.

"The parties to the conflict in Yemen are not yet ready to achieve peace, because each of the conflicting parties still thinks and speculates that it can achieve victory itself, either militarily or politically. In fact, this is impossible because if any of the parties or a group of parties is able to weaken the other side or another group of parties, the winner will not be able to completely eliminate the other side, and the weak side, in turn, will offer resistance," Azzana said during a press conference at Rossiya Segodnya International Information Agency.

He also lamented that Yemen was still suffering.

"The phase of the attainment of peace is still far away from us. We are now under the violence of the military and the egoism of politicians, getting lost in the tangle of interests of regional and international parties," he added.

Yemen has been engulfed in an armed conflict between the government forces, led by President Abdrabuh Mansour Hadi, and the rebel Houthi movement for years. A Saudi-led coalition has been carrying out airstrikes against the Houthis at Hadi's request since March 2015. The conflict has resulted in a massive humanitarian crisis in the war-torn country.
