Int'l Contact Group on Venezuela Plans to Hold Ministerial Meeting From May 6-7 - EU

The International Contact Group (ICG) on Venezuela plans to hold its next ministerial-level meeting from May 6-7 in Costa Rica, a spokeswoman for the European External Action Service said on Tuesday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 30th April, 2019) The International Contact Group (ICG) on Venezuela plans to hold its next ministerial-level meeting from May 6-7 in Costa Rica, a spokeswoman for the European External Action Service said on Tuesday.

"That's the date of the ministerial meeting of the Contact Group in Costa Rica, May 6 and 7," Maja Kocijancic said at a briefing when asked to confirm the dates of the next ICG meeting.

EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini is due to attend the meeting, she added.

The ICG comprises eight EU member states and four Latin American countries. After its ministerial-level meeting in March, the parties issued a declaration ruling out the use of force in Venezuela and suggesting that local political parties should reach an agreement on the basis of a road map for holding a new presidential election.

Venezuela has been going through an acute political crisis since January, when opposition leader Juan Guaido declared himself interim president of Venezuela after disputing incumbent leader Nicolas Maduro's re-election in May. Washington immediately endorsed Guaido and called on Maduro to step down.

Maduro has, in turn, accused the United States of trying to orchestrate a coup. Russia, China, Cuba, Bolivia, Turkey and a number of other countries have voiced their support for Maduro as the legitimate president of Venezuela.
