Myanmar Court Rejection Of Reuters Reporters' Appeal 'Grave Injustice' - UN Rights Experts

UNITED NATIONS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 26th April, 2019) A decision by Myanmar's Supreme Court to reject the appeal by two jailed Reuters journalists sentenced in connection with their investigation into the massacre of Rohingya men and boys represents an example of a grave injustice, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) said in a statement on Thursday.

"UN human rights experts said the rejection by Myanmar's Supreme Court of a final appeal by two jailed Reuters journalists was a grave injustice, and represented a dark day for media freedoms and democracy in the country," the statement said.

Myanmar's top court on Tuesday sentenced the two journalists, Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, to seven years in prison for violating Myanmar's State Secrets Act while reporting on the country's Rohingya crisis.

OHCHR experts have written to the government of Myanmar to express their concern about the arrest and the conviction, the statement said.

The two journalists were arrested in December 2017 during their work on the investigation.
