Ambassador Huntsman, 6th Fleet Chiefs Discuss US Cooperation With Russia - Statement

US Ambassador to Russia Jon Huntsman discussed with the US 6th Fleet chiefs the maritime environment in Europe and military relations with Russia, including ways to cooperate with that country, the US Naval Forces Europe-Africa said in a statement on Tuesday

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 23rd April, 2019) US Ambassador to Russia Jon Huntsman discussed with the US 6th Fleet chiefs the maritime environment in Europe and military relations with Russia, including ways to cooperate with that country, the US Naval Forces Europe-Africa said in a statement on Tuesday.

"The leaders discussed US military relations with Russia and the security environment throughout Europe," the statement said. "The conversations focused on ways to achieve cooperation with Russia, but also how the US Navy is working with allies and partners to deter Russian aggression and reaffirm its commitment to the region."

Huntsman explained that the United States is seeking a better relationship with Russia, but said such relationship can happen only when Russia changes what he characterized was its aggressive behavior.

In addition, Huntsman said achieving better relations necessitates Russia creating space for "creative dialogue."

However, Huntsman said Washington will maintain pressure on Russia if it engages in activities that affect the national security interests of the United States and those of its allies and partners.

"We will continue to impose cost on Russia when it takes actions aimed at our partners and allies and US national security interests," Huntsman said.

The ambassador emphasized the United States' commitment to maintain dialogue with Russia and find areas for cooperation.

"At the same time, we remain committed to dialogue to deescalate situations and find areas where we can work together," Huntsman said.

The discussion took place at the 6th Fleet headquarters in Naples, Italy, and was attended by US Naval Forces Europe-Africa Commander Adm. James Foggo and other military leaders, according to the statement.
