GENEVA (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 23rd April, 2019) At least 45 children have died as a result of the deadly bombing attacks in Sri Lanka, United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) said on Tuesday.

"The total now is 45 children who died," UNICEF spokesman Christophe Boulierac told reporters in Geneva.

The spokesman added that the death toll could rise as many other minors were hospitalized and were in critical condition.

UNICEF confirmed that 27 children were killed in the St. Sebatian's Church attack in the western city of Negombo and 13 children were killed in the eastern city of Batticaloa. Five more children killed in Sunday's attacks were confirmed to be foreign nationals, but the spokesman did not give details on where they were killed.

On Easter Sunday, various churches and hotels in Sri Lanka's capital Colombo and several other cities were hit by a series of coordinated bombing attacks. As of Tuesday, the death toll from the attacks is reported to be 321 and over 500 people have been injured. Police have arrested 40 people so far on suspicion of their involvement in the attack. On Tuesday, the Islamic State terrorist organization (banned in Russia) reportedly claimed responsibility for the attacks.
