Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Believes Parliament to Pass Bill on State Language Soon

Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Viacheslav Kyrylenko said on Monday that he believed the Ukrainian parliament would pass a bill regarding the country's official language this week and then put it before President Petro Poroshenko to be signed

KIEV (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd April, 2019) Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Viacheslav Kyrylenko said on Monday that he believed the Ukrainian parliament would pass a bill regarding the country's official language this week and then put it before President Petro Poroshenko to be signed.

The draft law, currently on its second reading in parliament, aims to expand the Ukrainian language's role in almost all spheres of life, making it mandatory for state and local authorities, all educational institutions, hospitals, and the service sector. Poroshenko said on Sunday that he would "definitely" sign the bill if the parliament passed it this week.

"This week is decisive for the bill on the Ukrainian language there should be a vote. Despite the uncertain political situation now, I am convinced that the draft law will be passed. And incumbent president Poroshenko clearly said yesterday that he was ready to sign this fundamental for Ukraine bill," Kyrylenko wrote on his Facebook page.

The runoff election between Poroshenko and Volodymyr Zelenskiy was held on Sunday. According to the country's Central Election Commission, Zelenskiy is leading with over 73 percent of the vote with more than 95 percent of ballots counted. Poroshenko has already conceded his defeat. The inauguration of the new president should take place before June 3.
