German Chancellor Angela Merkel and UK Prime Minister Theresa May have congratulated Volodymyr Zelenskiy on his landslide victory in Sunday's presidential race in Ukraine, expressing readiness for joint work

MOSCOW/LONDON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd April, 2019) German Chancellor Angela Merkel and UK Prime Minister Theresa May have congratulated Volodymyr Zelenskiy on his landslide victory in Sunday's presidential race in Ukraine, expressing readiness for joint work.

"Dear Mr. Zelenskiy, I cordially congratulate you on your victory in the presidential election in Ukraine," Merkel said in a statement, posted on the government's website.

Merkel also pledged that Berlin would continue actively supporting Ukraine, especially in its right to sovereignty and territorial integrity.

"I will be glad to have the opportunity to receive you in Berlin soon. I wish you happiness and success in the tasks ahead," Merkel added.

The UK prime minister has also joined congratulations, reiterating London's support for Ukraine's sovereignty.

"Congratulations to Volodymyr Zelenskiy on your election success. Ukraine's stability is essential for Europe's security, and I look forward to working closely with you. The UK is steadfast in its support for Ukrainian sovereignty," May wrote on Twitter.

The runoff between Zelenskiy and incumbent Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko was held on Sunday. According to the country's Central Election Commission, Zelenskiy is leading with 73.21 percent of the vote after 99 percent of ballots were counted. Poroshenko, who secured 24.46 percent, has already admitted his defeat.
