DPR Ombudswoman Hopes for Prisoners Exchange With Kiev After Presidential Runoff

Human rights commissioner of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) Daria Morozova told Sputnik on Thursday that she hoped for a prisoners exchange after the second round of the Ukrainian presidential election

DONETSK (Ukraine) (Pakistan Point news / Sputnik - 18th April, 2019) Human rights commissioner of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) Daria Morozova told Sputnik on Thursday that she hoped for a prisoners exchange after the second round of the Ukrainian presidential election.

The second round of the Ukrainian presidential election is scheduled for Sunday.

"Hopefully, there will be a political decision after the second round of the Ukrainian presidential election and the prisoners exchange will take place after 1.5 years of expectations," Morozova said.

She pointed out that Kiev had not responded to the DPR initiative to exchange all identified prisoners.

"If the Ukrainian party wanted to exchange them, we have a formula, prepared lists and we could have done for a long time ago. That means that the Ukrainian party is not interested in returning specific people from the lists," Morozova stressed.

The conflict in Donbas started in 2014, when Ukrainian authorities launched a military operation against the self-proclaimed republics that refused to recognize the new government in Kiev, which came to power after what they considered to be a coup.

In February 2015, the warring parties signed the Minsk peace accords to end the hostilities in the region, but the situation has remained tense, with both parties accusing each other of ceasefire violations.
