Sudanese Opposition Demands From Military Council Immediate Power Transfer To Civil Bodies

KHARTOUM (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 13th April, 2019) The Sudanese opposition demands that the Military Council should immediately transfer power to a civil government, Mohammad Youssef, a member of the secretariat of the opposition Sudanese Professionals Association, told Sputnik on Friday.

On Thursday, Sudanese Defense Minister Awad Mohamed Ahmed Ibn Auf announced the establishment of a military council that would govern the country for two years. However, the head of the military council's political committee, Omar Zain Abidin, said earlier on Friday that the term of the council's work could be reduced to one month if the situation in the country stabilizes.

"We are seeking the immediate transfer of power, not a month or two years later. The forces that are seeking reforms have specific demands on following the democratic path that will solve the corruption issue and other problems that resulted from the rule of the salvation government [of former President Omar Bashir]," Youssef said.

He pointed out that members of the military council had been a part of Bashir's elite.

Youssef pointed out that there was no legal basis for forming the military council and called on all political forces and the army to reach agreement on forming the government.

According to Youssef, the Sudanese people are against the curfew imposed after the Thursday coup.
