Military Takeover Inappropriate Answer To Sudan's Issues - African Union Commission Chair

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 11th April, 2019) A military takeover is not a good response to the issues plaguing Sudan, African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat said Thursday, according to an AU statement.

Earlier in the day, Sudanese Defense Minister Awad Mohamed Ahmed Ibn Auf announced the establishment of a military council that would govern the country for two years. The minister added that President Omar Bashir had been detained and that a three-month-long state of emergency had been imposed in the country.

"The Chairperson expresses the African Union conviction that the military takeover is not the appropriate response to the challenges facing Sudan and the aspirations of its people," the statement read.

The chairman urged for calm and restraint on part of all those involved in the crisis in Sudan.

"The Chairperson further appeals to all stakeholders to engage in an inclusive dialogue to create the conditions that will make it possible to meet the aspirations of the Sudanese people to democracy, good governance and wellbeing and restore constitutional order as soon as possible," the statement read.
