UK Prime Minister Welcomes News Of Assange's Arrest

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 11th April, 2019) UK Prime Minister Theresa May on Thursday said she was certain the UK parliament would welcome the news of the arrest of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, adding that his fate would now be decided in court.

The UK police arrested Assange in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, where he had been residing since 2012 as political refugee, after Ecuador withdrew asylum. The UK police confirmed later in the day that the arrest had been made "on behalf of the United States authorities."

"I am sure that the whole House will welcome the news this morning that the Metropolitan Police have arrested Julian Assange, arrested for breach of bail, after nearly seven years in the Ecuadorian Embassy. He has also been arrested in relation to an extradition request from the United States' authorities. This is now a legal matter before the courts," May told the House of Commons.
