BENGHAZI (Libya) (Pakistan Point news / Sputnik - 10th April, 2019) The Libyan National Army, headed by Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, is carrying out airstrikes targeting the positions of the forces loyal to the UN-backed Government of National Accord to the south of Libyan capital Tripoli, a source in the LNA told Sputnik.

Earlier in the day, a LNA source told Sputnik that the GNA forces were conducting airstrikes against LNA facilities some 25 miles away from the capital, where the GNA is based.

"Fighter aircraft have carried out strikes along the positions of the GNA troops on the way to the [Tripoli] international airport south of Tripoli," the source said.

Heavy clashes are taking place in one of the areas, and the LNA had gained control over several camps, the source added.

The situation in Libya, which has been in a state of a civil conflict since 2011, escalated last week after Haftar announced an offensive against Tripoli to oust "militias" from the city. On April 7, forces loyal to the GNA said that they launched a counteroffensive operation.
