Trump Calls Mueller's Russia Investigation 'Attempted Coup'

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said that Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into alleged Russian interference during the 2016 US presidential election was an "attempted coup" and should be probed by Attorney General William Barr

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 10th April, 2019) US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said that Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into alleged Russian interference during the 2016 US presidential election was an "attempted coup" and should be probed by Attorney General William Barr.

"This was an attempted coup. This was an attempted takedown of a president. And we beat them," Trump said.

The president described the investigation as a waste of time and money that was illegally started by "dirty cops." Trump hopes that the attorney general will take a look at the origins of the investigation, which he described as an "illegal witch-hunt."

Trump added that he has neither seen nor read the Muller report.

"I won. No collusion, no obstruction," Trump said. "As far as I'm concerned, I don't care about the Mueller report. I've been totally exonerated."

On Tuesday, Barr told Congress that he expects to release a redacted version the Mueller report within a week.

The attorney general added that he has no intentions at this stage to release the full, unredacted report to the House of Representatives Judiciary Committee.

Last week, the House Judiciary Committee passed a resolution approving the authorization of subpoenas to obtain Mueller's full unredacted report.

The resolution also approved the authorization of subpoenas for underlying evidence from Mueller's investigation related to five former aides to President Donald Trump, including political adviser Steve Bannon.

Mueller recently concluded his 22-month investigation into allegations of Trump-Russia collusion in the 2016 US presidential election. Barr has said in his letter to Congress that Mueller concluded in his report that President Donald Trump's campaign did not collude with Russia during the election.

Mueller, however, maintained that Russia did try to interfere in the election, an assertion Moscow has repeatedly denied.

Russian officials have said the allegations were made up to excuse the election loss of Trump's opponent as well as deflect public attention from actual instances of election fraud and corruption.
