Overall Media Credibility Down in US Due to Drop in Republicans' Trust in Media - Poll

US citizens' trust in media decreased by 5 percent since 2016, a drop which was largely driven by the perceptions of Republicans, Morning Consult media research company said on Tuesday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 09th April, 2019) US citizens' trust in media decreased by 5 percent since 2016, a drop which was largely driven by the perceptions of Republicans, Morning Consult media research company said on Tuesday.

In its research, Morning Consult surveyed the public views regarding nine leading media outlets, namely ABS, CBS, NBC, CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and NPR.

"The share of U.S. adults who said nine leading media outlets including ABC and The Wall Street Journal were credible has dropped an average of 5 percentage points over the past three years. The small decline was largely driven by Republicans, who became on average 12 points less likely to say those organizations were credible, dropping from 56 percent to 44 percent during that time period," Morning Consult said.

The company also revealed that The New York Times and CNN had suffered the most significant drops of trust among Republicans.

Fox News, a conservative pro-Republican news channel, turned out to be the only media outlet that maintained unchanged credibility both among Republicans and Democrats.

The survey was measured across four Morning Consult surveys conducted since December 2016. The latest poll was conducted among 2,201 US adults between March 28 and April 2 and has a 2 percent margin of error.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly attacked various US news outlets as being agents of misinformation and "fake news." Since taking office, Trump has used the word "fake" over 400 times and has been the most vocal about The New York Times and CNN.
