Australian Police Detain 39 Animal Rights Protesters for Disrupting Traffic in Melbourne

The Australian police said on Monday they detained 39 animal rights activists who disrupted the work of one of Melbourne's busiest intersections during peak hour

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 08th April, 2019) The Australian police said on Monday they detained 39 animal rights activists who disrupted the work of one of Melbourne's busiest intersections during peak hour.

"Police have arrested 39 people, including two 17-year-olds and a 15-year-old, following a protest in the CBD [central business district] this morning. It is understood three vehicles were used to block the intersection of Flinders and Swanston streets, with a number of people chaining themselves to the vehicles. The protesters have been arrested in relation to obstructing a roadway, resisting or obstructing police, and are expected to be charged on summons," the statement said.

According to ABC broadcaster, this action caused a two-hour disruption of traffic in the area. Another group of activists also blocked the entrance to the Melbourne Aquarium, according to the broadcaster.

Kristin Leigh, the director of Vegan Rising campaign that organized the demonstration, said that nine other protests were taking place across the country throughout the day.

A total of three Australian states, namely Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria, were affected by vegan protests on Monday.

The protests are timed to coincide with the first anniversary of the release of Dominion, an Australian documentary focused on animal agriculture. The film used shooting from drones and hidden cameras to expose the cruel treatment of animals.
