US Asks UN Security Council To Address Venezuela Humanitarian Situation Next Week - Source

UNITED NATIONS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 05th April, 2019) The United States has requested the UN Security Council to convene a meeting next week to discuss the humanitarian situation in Venezuela, a diplomatic source told Sputnik on Thursday.

The source confirmed that the US mission to the United Nations had asked the UN Security Council to hold a session regarding the humanitarian situation in Venezuela.

The meeting might take place on April 10, but setting a firm date will depend on the decision of the presiding country of the UN Security Council and this month that is Germany.

The United States has been seeking to bring humanitarian aid to Venezuela via Colombia ever since January 23 when opposition leader Juan Guaido proclaimed himself interim president of Venezuela.

However, US participation in the operation has raised concerns of Venezuela and Russia, among other states, which have suggested the United States may be arming the Venezuelan opposition and preparing a government overthrow under the guise of a humanitarian campaign.

The Venezuelan government of actual President Nicolas Maduro has blocked the alleged aid deliveries from entering the country.

At the same time, the International Committee of the Red Cross has said that it has gained an opportunity to organize unhindered humanitarian aid deliveries to Venezuela.
