German Government Prolongs Missions in Mali, Near Somali Shore for 12 Months - Spokesman

The German government prolonged for a year military missions in Mali and near the shore of Somalia, German government's spokesman Steffen Seibert said on Wednesday

BERLIN (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 03rd April, 2019) The German government prolonged for a year military missions in Mali and near the shore of Somalia, German government's spokesman Steffen Seibert said on Wednesday.

"The cabinet prolonged three foreign missions of the Bundeswehr [German Armed Forces], the final decision on prolongation will be made by the Bundestag. I am speaking about two missions in Mali and one more near the shore of Somali. The UN Mission in Mali, MINSUMA, mission of UN instructors on training the Malian Armed Forces as well as the EU mission Atalanta near the Somali shore - all the three missions - are prolonged until May 30, 2020," Seibert said.

The German contingent of almost 900 servicemen is part in the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA). The soldiers of the Bundeswehr are deployed in the city of Gao. German experts are also taking part in the European Union Training Mission (EUTM) Mali aimed at boosting combat capabilities of the Malian army.

The NAVFOR Atalanta mission was launched by the European Union near the Somali shore in December 2008 to tackle piracy in the region.
