Russia, China Plan Joint Ocean Research Using Deep-Submergence Vehicles - Science Academy

Russia and China plan to conduct joint seabed research using automated deep-submergence vehicles, the president of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Alexander Sergeyev, said on Wednesday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 03rd April, 2019) Russia and China plan to conduct joint seabed research using automated deep-submergence vehicles, the president of the Russian academy of Sciences, Alexander Sergeyev, said on Wednesday.

"A joint experiment where two deep-diving submersibles, one Russian and one Chinese, conduct joint research, exchange information autonomously and form a synergy could be a symbol of cooperation. We offered to carry out the joint experiment to the Chinese, and they supported it. It will probably take place somewhere near Vladivostok," he said during a press conference.

Sergeyev also stressed that Russia was working on building a deep-diving vehicle that would submerge into the Mariana Trench, the deepest trench in the world.

Alexander Buzakov, the general director of Russian submarine manufacturer Admiralty Shipyards, announced in December that his company had decided to create a submersible for descending into the Mariana Trench.

The Mariana Trench, located in the western Pacific Ocean, is 36,070 feet deep. The first manned descent into the Mariana Trench was successfully conducted by Don Walsh of the United States and Switzerland's Jacques Piccard as they reached the deepest point of the trench, the Challenger Deep, aboard Bathyscaphe Trieste in 1960.
