ANTALYA (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 29th March, 2019) Russia and Turkey are implementing two of their main joint projects, the Akkuyu nuclear power plant (NPP) and the TurkStream gas pipeline, on schedule, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Friday after talks with his Turkish counterpart, Mevlut Cavusoglu.

"We have analyzed the course of implementation of major investment projects, including TurkStream and the construction of the Akkuyu NPP by Russian experts. Both projects are being implemented on schedule. I am sure that they will be ready by the deadline," Lavrov said.

The TurkStream twin-pipeline will have a maximum capacity of 31.5 billion cubic meters (1.1 trillion cubic feet) a year. The first leg will deliver Russian gas under the Black Sea to Turkey for local consumption starting this year. The second leg is expected to carry gas to Southern and Central Europe.

An intergovernmental cooperation agreement to build the Akkuyu plant was signed by Moscow and Ankara in April 2018. The plant's four 1,200-megawatt power units are each expected to produce about 35 billion kilowatt-hours per year. The project's total cost is about $20 billion. Turkey expects the plant's first unit to begin operating in 2023.
