Mexican Senate Votes to Strip President, Federal Lawmakers of Immunity

The upper house of the Mexican bicameral Congress, the Senate of the Republic, voted to strip the president and federal lawmakers of their immunity

QUITO (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 28th March, 2019) The upper house of the Mexican bicameral Congress, the Senate of the Republic, voted to strip the president and Federal lawmakers of their immunity.

"We have approved the decision about a constitutional reform that extends prerequisites for convicting and trialing the president of the United Mexican States and federal lawmakers," the Senate said in a statement out late on Wednesday.

Treason against the state was previously the only prerequisite for investigation against the president or federal lawmakers. Now that the list has been extended, it includes corruption, election-related crimes and grave crimes.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador suggested this reform during his election campaign. Shortly after taking office on December 1, 2018, he submitted a relevant draft constitutional amendment to the country's upper chamber.
