US Calls on China to Release Minorities From Internment Camps - State Department

The United States calls on China to release Muslims that have been arbitrarily detained in internment camps, State Department spokesperson Robert Palladino said in a press release on Wednesday

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 27th March, 2019) The United States calls on China to release Muslims that have been arbitrarily detained in internment camps, State Department spokesperson Robert Palladino said in a press release on Wednesday.

"We call on the Chinese government to release immediately these individuals' family members and all others arbitrarily detained in the camps," Pompeo said.

On Tuesday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with Mihrigul Tursun, a Uighur Muslim who was tortured in an internment camp, and three other Uighurs with family members still detained, according to the release.

The US estimates that China has detained 1 million Uighurs, ethnic Kazakhs, and members of other Muslim minority groups in a crackdown that began in April 2017, the release said.

Last week, a Chinese State council in a white paper said authorities in the northwestern autonomous region of Xinjiang have detained nearly 13,000 terrorists since 2014 as part of efforts to combat extremism. China has denied accusations that it discriminates against Uighurs, insisting that the country fully complies with international law.
