At Least 700 People Killed by Cyclone Idai, Hundreds Missing - UN Chief

At least 700 people have been killed and hundreds more are missing in Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe as a result of tropical cyclone Idai, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a statement on Tuesday

UNITED NATIONS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 26th March, 2019) At least 700 people have been killed and hundreds more are missing in Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe as a result of tropical cyclone Idai, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a statement on Tuesday.

"The death toll across the three countries is at least 700, but with hundreds still missing," Guterres said.

The UN Secretary-General pointed out that the tropical cyclone has had devastating effects on millions of people in the region who are now in dire need of humanitarian assistance.

"The devastation has affected an estimated three million people, nearly two-thirds of them in Mozambique; at least one million children need urgent assistance, and this number may well grow," Guterres said.

On Monday, the United Nations appealed for $282 million for the relief response in Mozambique in the next quarter.

On March 15, tropical cyclone Idai hit Mozambique and then continued to neighboring Zimbabwe and Malawi, triggering floods and landfalls.
