Tension With New Delhi to Remain in Place Until Election in India-Pakistani Prime Minister

Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan said on Tuesday that Indo-Pakistani relations would remain tense until the upcoming general elections in India

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 26th March, 2019) Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan said on Tuesday that Indo-Pakistani relations would remain tense until the upcoming general elections in India.

"The danger is not over. The situation will remain tense till forthcoming general elections in India. We are already prepared to avert any aggression from India," Khan said as quoted by the Dawn newspaper.

According to Khan, Indian Prime Minister Narenda Modi is trying to use anti-Pakistan narrative in his election campaign.

Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated last month, after the Pakistani military shot down two Indian warplanes in the disputed region of Kashmir, responding to an earlier airstrike by Indian aircraft against what New Delhi said was a camp of Jaish-e-Mohammad group, considered terrorists by India and located on the Pakistani soil across the so-called Line of Control, separating India- and Pakistan- controlled areas of Kashmir.

The Indian airstrike came after a deadly attack by Jaish-e-Mohammad on the Indian paramilitary police force in Kashmir in mid-February. While India has accused Pakistan of supporting the militants and having a "direct hand" in the incident, Pakistan, in turn, has rejected the allegations.

The 2019 Indian general election is scheduled to be held in seven phases between April 11 and May 19. Several thousand candidates will compete for 543 parliamentary seats in the Lok Sabha, the Indian parliament's lower house. The vote count will be held on May 23.
