Russian Lawmaker Calls Kiev-NATO Platform for Return of Crimea Utopian

SIMFEROPOL (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 26th March, 2019) The Ukraine-NATO project to create of a platform that would return Crimea to Ukraine is idealistic and has no chances of succeeding, Mikhail Sheremet, a Russian lawmaker representing the Republic of Crimea, told Sputnik.

On Monday, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said that Kiev and NATO were negotiating a platform to return the peninsula to Ukraine.

"The creation of such a platform is a futile project. It is simply a utopia. There is no chance Crimea will return under Ukraine's jurisdiction. The main goal of all this propaganda is to create an image of Russia as the enemy," the lawmaker said.

Sheremet noted that NATO should instead come up with platforms to help the countries that the alliance had bombed and where it had established "democracy" with the help of weapons.

Crimea's reunification with Russia in 2014 was preceded by a regional referendum, in which almost 97 percent of local residents who voted in the referendum chose to reunite with Russia following a change of power in Kiev, which some considered to be a coup.

Ukraine and the majority of the international community refuse to recognize Russia's sovereignty over the territory, with Kiev considering Crimea "temporarily occupied." Moscow, in turn, insists on the legitimacy of the referendum, saying that the territory is an integral part of Russia.
