MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 26th March, 2019) Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet his Lebanese counterpart, Michel Aoun, on Tuesday as part of the latter's two-day visit to Russia.

The plane with the Lebanese leader on board landed in Moscow on Monday.

During the meeting, Putin and Aoun are set to address the development of economic, trade and humanitarian cooperation between Lebanon and Russia as well as exchange opinions on regional and international issues.

The Lebanese president particularly plans to address the situation in the middle East, including the rights of Christian minorities living in the region, repatriation of Syrian refugees sheltered in Lebanon, as well as the status of Jerusalem.

Last week, Aoun told Russian media that Moscow could act as a mediator in settlement of the differences between Lebanon and Israel.

According to the Lebanese president, Beirut also wants to develop cultural, scientific and tourist cooperation with Moscow.

On Monday, Lebanese Minister of State for Foreign Trade Hassan Mrad expressed hope that Aoun's visit would be of great importance for Beirut both in economic and political terms.

The minister of state also praised Russia's role in the exploration and extraction of oil on the Lebanese shelf and described bilateral economic relations as strategic. He stressed the need for removing any obstacles to broader cooperation.

That is the first Aoun's visit to Russia since he came to power in 2016.
