Qatar Started to Better Understand Russia's Stance on Syria - Russian Ambassador

Qatar has been demonstrating much deeper understanding of Russia's stance on the Syrian crisis, with the two countries maintaining a dialogue on Syria at all times despite the fact that Moscow and Doha still have their disagreements over the issue, the Russian ambassador to the Persian Gulf country, Nurmakhmad Kholov, said in an interview with Sputnik

DOHA (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 19th March, 2019) Qatar has been demonstrating much deeper understanding of Russia's stance on the Syrian crisis, with the two countries maintaining a dialogue on Syria at all times despite the fact that Moscow and Doha still have their disagreements over the issue, the Russian ambassador to the Persian Gulf country, Nurmakhmad Kholov, said in an interview with Sputnik.

"As for the Syrian problem, amid the ongoing crisis in [Qatar's] relations with the Persian Gulf countries, Doha has become less active in this area [Syria] and started to demonstrate much more understanding of Russia's approach in this regard," the ambassador said.

At the same time, Kholov noted that Moscow and Doha still had not resolved their differences over Syria.

"But the most important thing is that we maintain a constant dialogue, mutually striving to achieve a common goal ensure peace and security on the long-suffering Syrian soil," the diplomat concluded.

After the beginning of the civil conflict in Syria in 2011, Qatar supported the opposition forces that fought against President Bashar Assad's government. Many of the Syrian opposition figures later found refuge in Doha.

Russia, in turn, has been supporting official Damascus throughout the war and provided military support to the Syrian government forces in their fight against the militants.

Meanwhile, a number of countries, including such Persian Gulf nations as Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, severed diplomatic ties with Doha in 2017, after accusing Qatar of supporting terrorism.

Qatari officials regretted the neighbors' move, insisting that their decision was based on false allegations.
