WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 13th March, 2019) The United States is providing $7 million to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to assist in the construction of its new analytical laboratory in The Netherlands, the US Department of State said in a press release.

"The United States announced this morning $7 million in assistance over two years for the construction of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) Centre for Chemistry and Technology," the release said on Tuesday.

The State Department explained that the US funds are provided by the Department of Defense's Cooperative Threat Reduction Program.

The new OPCW laboratory will enhance the organization's investigatory capabilities and conduct other chemical weapons research, the release said.

The OPCW has recently investigated the alleged use of chemical weapons by the Syrian government of Bashar Assad in addition to Russia's alleged use of a chemical agent in Salisbury, United Kingdom. Both, Russia and Syria have repeatedly denied using chemical weapons.
